Hip Hop/R&B Now The Dominant Genre In The U.S. For The First Time Ever

According to Nielsen Music's annual mid-year report, Hip Hop/R&B is the most dominant genre in the market today. Rock music was the previous title-holder.

The report even states that K. Dot's WINNING. "Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. is the album that the American public simply can’t get enough of," Forbes writes.

Understandably, Rock music still sells more albums overall, with about 40% of all album sales swinging in that direction. However, "R&B and hip-hop are now responsible for 25.1% of all music consumption in the U.S., while rock claims 23%."

"At least seven of the top 10 most popular songs on streaming platforms in 2017 fit squarely into the hip-hop field, while another, Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like," blends pop and R&B."
