January 21st: Fellow DJ and my good friend WOLFMAN JACK was born on this day. At one point, we were on the same radio station in Mexico XPRS-AM. Another good friend, Dick Clark, interviewed Wolfman on American Bandstand....(HOOOWL) this brought back memories, they both look great!
Other 1/21 birthdays include folk singer Richie Havens, Edwin Starr (singer of the #1 hit "War"), Jam Master Jay of Run DMC, Mac Davis singer/composer (wrote "In The Ghetto" for Elvis) and opera legend Placido Domingo.
On this day in 1984, Jackie Wilson ("Lonely Teardrops" and "Higher and Higher") died after suffering the effects of a stroke over eight years earlier and Charles Brown passed in 1999 and every holiday season his songs, "Please Come Home For Christmas" and "Merry Christmas Baby", are still the most requested. Both legendary voices will always be remembered.
And we will always remember the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr., every 3rd Monday of January is a Federal Holiday in his honor. To see dedications to Dr. King, click here. And this year, President Obama was sworned into office for his second term on MLK Day. To see the President's speech, Beyonce's performance and other Inauguration news, click here
