A skydiver from California was attempting a hard stunt after jumping from about 8,000 feet when both of his parachutes failed and he went into a three-minute spin.

He hit the ground at 30 mph and survived with only minor injuries.

The 51-year-old man jumped from the plane above some vineyards with his friend and housemate. The two were attempting what's called a "down plane flag," which is a flag-release stunt where their parachutes land on the ground with a flag landing straight up on a lanyard. But the parachutes didn't cooperate, and the man found himself plummeting to earth.

With only half of his main chute deployed, he went for his auxiliary parachute, which went directly into his main chute and stayed in there. He reached 1,700 feet and realized his situation hadn't gotten any better.

He got lucky because he landed parallel to the road in a row of grapes, in freshly plowed dirt, which was very soft.

His shoulder was dislocated in the fall, but other than that, had just a few bumps and bruises.

He says he'll be diving again soon, but he's not sure about any more complicated stunts.
