Today while you're trying to get your quick Hamburger on you might be stopped by protestors! According to reports many workers from various fast food chain restaurants will be going on strike today because they want the minimum wage raised to $15.00 - it's currently at $8.00! The protestors also want to be able to form a union and not get punished for it! Now I do have a few opinions about this and I’m sort of on the fence.
1. Fifteen dollars?!?!? Really?!?! That’s the number you go with?? That’s a huge jump and probably not going to happen. I started working at Starbucks when I was 18 years ago and back then the minimum wage was about $6.75, which means since 2002 it’s only gone up about a $1.25. – Now don’t get me wrong I do think the minimum wage should go up, but pretty much doubling it sounds like a bit much!
2. Now many of these workers are trying to provide for families and some of them can’t make ends meet because they aren’t making enough money and some of them still need government support. So if these HUGE companies like McDonalds and Taco Bell increase the wage maybe these families can get off government support.
3. HOWEVER, If someone can make $31,000 a year by working at McDonalds, what kind of goals are we setting for our kids??? Jobs like McDonalds and Taco Bell really are career starter jobs, sometimes people stay within the company and move up. Some are working and going to school at the same time. But if a kid in High School knows he can make that much just working there will he stop trying to improve himself and go to school and possibly start a career????
What do you guys think??? Should the minimum wage be raised???
