Most people know the movie La Bamba because it depicts the story of legendary singer Ritchie Valens. La Bamba is a tear jerker in the end, but it definitely is a classic that is a MUST SEE.

This past Saturday, I attended the first ever Latina Pinups Magazine and calendar launch party. I must admit, I was a bit skeptic just because I’ve been caught in the middle where some
As I approached the hour to attend, I had to fly solo because my friends tend to be lame (love you, but its true). The party started at which meant for me, no I kid; however, there were several street closures that had to be on the same 2 mile radius of where the event was held which made parking to be a hassle. The party took place at the “M Bar” in Boyle Heights- it was a first for me being in that bar and area. The neighborhood on
I finally found parking on 1st, but only for an hour which made things a little more difficult. I got out of my car just to have my camera fall out of my bag and roll under my car. Being that I was on a main street, I really didn’t want to bend over and pick it up. Two gentlemen were passing by and I asked if one could assist me, “Memo” was kind enough to help and I soon found myself making a new friend.
I walked up to the venue where the bouncer (can’t remember the name) was a complete sweetheart! Not only was he polite, but also helpful in informing me of other options to park closer. I checked in and entered to what ended up being one of the best nights of my Style Me Classic experience.
I met with Latina Pinups
As the night commenced, I decided to start the interview with these talented women.
SMC: Who is/are the creator(s) of Latina Pinup Magazine (LPM)?
Erika: My name is Erika Lagunas (Erika Breezy) and I am the creator of Latina Pinups Magazine. I am a pinup model and
SMC: I've been following you on Facebook for a few months- what got you to launch Latina Pinups on Facebook (LP FB)?
Erika: I noticed that there was no fan page dedicated to
SMC: What is the criterion for one to be published on LPM or LP FB?
Erika: We encourage all models, hair and makeup artists, photographers, and businesses to apply for a chance to be featured on Latina Pinups Magazine and/or Latina Pinups on Facebook. Most important we look for traditional pinup images that showcase the nostalgia feeling of a traditional pin-up; the Latino culture and the best pin-up inspire photography.
SMC: With your LP FB community expanding, what got you to launch a magazine?
Erika: I have noticed that there was no magazine dedicated to
SMC: How long has LP been in the social media scene?
Erika: Latina Pinups FB has been in the social media scene for 8 months. Since the launch of Latina Pinups FB, in December 2012, it has dramatically taken the social media by storm. Fans from all the over world are thrilled and excited to have a page that features the array of true beauty of Latinas and Pinups combine!
SMC: Did you always want to start your own magazine?
Erika: It has always been a dream of mine to start my own magazine! As a college student, I wanted to make it possible. Though I have my goals and dreams to earn my Master’s Degree in Social Work, I also have a passion and thrive to do what I love! My love for the pinup scene is what gave the perseverance to push forth and do it. I want to be able to expose the models, photographers, small businesses and writers who are thriving for their dreams just like me.
SMC: As far as the community in social media, what would LPM like to accomplish in the Latin community outside of FB?
Erika: I would like to give to back to the community. As an avid humanitarian, I am very much involved in helping the community. I am donating a portion of the sale of the 2014 Latina Pinups calendar to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. My main dream is to open a scholarship fund to encourage Latina/Latino children to attend college.
SMC: Do you have any advice for any new ambitious self-starters such as yourselves?
Erika: I would encourage anyone to strive and continue to accomplish his or her dreams. Earn it! Achieve it! Believe in yourself!
…and with such encouraging words from a self starter, I decided to enjoy the rest of the evening mingling.
As pictures were taken, Erika offered me Sangria- a refreshing drink I usually don’t see served at a bar. It was delicious! I met CeCe, the talents behind “Come Hither Accessories”- these beautiful affordable flowers complimented a lot of the women that evening. As I continued to mingle and take pictures of the crowd dancing;pin-up models, Mely and Gee where making it sweat with their dance moves. The night progressed with “DJ Victorious” (Dos Guys Productions) spinning some classic oldies and some old school hip hop- my favorite is a rendition of Aretha Franklin’s, “One Step” remixed with Mos Def, “Ms. Fat Booty”. After the dancing, I got to meet photographer Charlie Rose of “Charlie Rose Photos”, her and her dapper husband were the grand winners of the raffle hosted by Sharon Escamilla- that woman is stunning!
The night continued with some laughs by some friendly people such as, Yesenia Mendoza, Christina Villa, and Samantha Chica. Pin-up model, Leslye Rox kept creeping up and scaring me- she truly is a wonderful person to hang with.
…and that’s when I realized- that all the people attending this event (with the exception of a creeper) were genuinely friendly souls; a reason that I will follow Latina Pinups Magazine wherever they may go.
